Incoming Student Scholarship Program


The Incoming Student Scholarship Program (ISSP) was established to provide financial assistance to male students who are starting their first semester at NIU. We offer two scholarships: one for incoming first-semester male freshmen and another for incoming first-semester male transfer students. These scholarships are sponsored by the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity undergraduate chapter and the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU. REQUIREMENTS - MUST meet THREE (3) of the following criterions
   

  • 1) Cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA from the most recent academic institution
     
  • 2) ACT score of 21 or higher
     
  • 3) SAT score of 1050 or higher
     
  • 4) Leadership Role in a student organization (i.e., President, Captain, Committee Chairman, etc.)
  • 5) Be enrolled as a full-time student (12+ hours) at NIU for the fall semester (Mandatory Requirement)

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be accepted for the Incoming Student Scholarship Program (ISSP) from July 1 to September 15 (fall semester) and January 1 to February 28 (spring semester). Please note that the application dates are subject to change without prior notice. All individuals who meet the specified requirements are encouraged to submit their applications. It is essential to provide an official transcript from your most recent academic institution before being considered for an award. The ISSP selection committee will thoroughly review all received applications and evaluate them based on merit. The top finalists in each category will then be forwarded to the PSK Alumni Association board president for the final selection. Winners will be notified via email and will be invited to a reception at the end of the semester to receive their awards. Please be aware that Phi Sigma Kappa retains the right to modify the qualifications and requirements at its discretion.

Affiliate (New Member Program) Financial Need Scholarship

This scholarship is specifically intended for individuals who demonstrate financial need while they are in the New Member program. The goal of this program is to assist those in the Affiliate Program by helping to offset the initiation fees required to become a member. Your eligibility for this scholarship will be evaluated based on the information you provide. The sponsorship for this scholarship comes from the Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU. We hope that your first semester as a potential member of Phi Sigs will be beneficial to your college journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at Scholarship@pskaaniu.org.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be accepted from the time you become an affiliate until 1 week before initiation each semester. We reserve the right to modify the application dates/process without notice.  Anyone who meets the above requirements is encouraged to submit their application.  Verification by the undergraduate chapter you are eligible for initiation will be required.  Also, verification of financial need may be required.  Once an application is received it will be reviewed by the PSK Alumni Association of NIU scholarship committee. The committee will evaluate each application on its merit and determine award winner(s) and amounts. The winner(s) will be notified via email or advised by the undergraduate Chapter President or Chapter Advisor.

The Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of NIU retains the authority to make changes to the terms, requirements, or options of this program without prior notice.

To qualify for this award, you must currently be an Affiliate/New member who has not yet been initiated into the fraternity. The awards granted will be credited towards your initiation fees, subject to certain limitations. It is necessary for you to be deemed eligible for initiation by a vote from both the undergraduate chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa and the Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the time the award is given. Verification of provided information may be required.

Who is sponsoring the PSK Alumni / Dr. Anthony Fusaro scholarship program?
 
The Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of Northern Illinois University is pleased to offer academic scholarships aimed at promoting and fostering scholastic excellence, aligning with our fundamental principle of "To Stimulate Scholarship." These scholarships are named in honor of Brother Dr. Anthony Fusaro, who served as the local chapter advisor from 1967 to 1990. Throughout his dedicated service to our fraternity, Brother Fusaro also held esteemed positions such as National Grand President and National Foundation President. Currently, he continues to contribute to Phi Sigma Kappa as the National Ritual Chairman and a Member of the National Court of Honor. Additionally, Brother Fusaro made significant contributions to the NIU community as a Political Science professor, Political Science Department Chairman, and Associate Provost. In 1990, he left NIU to become the President of one of Pennsylvania State University's campuses. Following his retirement, Dr. Fusaro now resides in Lakeland, FL.
 

 
Who’s eligible for receiving the PSK Alumni Association? / Dr. Anthony Fusaro scholarships?
 
 
There are two types of scholarships: One must have been a newly initiated member at the beginning of the semester the award was earned
 
  •  * Highest New Initiate GPA
  •  * New Initiate 3.0 or higher GPA
 
 
To be eligible for the Highest New Initiate or New Initiate GPA above 3.0 scholarships, you must:  Your membership status at the beginning of the semester the award was earned.
  • Be a newly initiated member in good standing the previous corresponding semester. For example, if you are applying in the Spring semester you would have to have initiated in the previous Fall semester 
  • Enrolled/Completed at least 12 hours at NIU for the semester.
 
  
Conditions under which a scholarship will NOT be given:
   
  • If you are not up-to-date on your financial obligations to the Alumni Association and the Active Chapter (This would include OMEGA financial balances). 
  • If you fail, in the eyes of the Active Chapter and/or the Alumni Association, to maintain the other two Cardinal Principles of Phi Sigma Kappa, To Promote Brotherhood and To Develop Character.
 
 
 

Who will make the Scholarship Decision?
 
The awards will be compiled by the PSK Alumni Scholarship Chairman with the help of the Local Chapter Scholarship Chairman and be submitted to the PSK Alumni Board of Directors for a final vote.
 

What are the Amounts of the Scholarships?
  • Highest New Initiate GPA = $250 or the amount below whichever is highest and a certificate *
  • New Initiate GPA awards are as follows also with a certificate *

3.50 to 3.74 = $300
3.25 to 3.49 = $200 
3.00 to 3.24 = $150

 What are the requirements for the scholarship recipients?
 
The primary factor in selecting successful candidates for the scholarship is their academic performance. However, if a recipient has engaged in behavior that is inconsistent with the values expected of a fraternity brother, whether it be towards the active chapter or the Alumni Association, they will be disqualified from receiving the stipend. This includes outstanding debts and property damage. The Alumni Association has the authority to make all final decisions regarding the awards. If an applicant wishes to appeal a decision, they should submit a written appeal to the Alumni Scholarship Chairman before the end of the semester in which the award is given. Appeals can be sent to Scholarship@PSKaaNIU.org.
 
In addition to the preceding eligibility requirements and conditions:
  • Candidates must submit the online scholarship request by February 15th (Fall) & June 15th (Spring).  Any late submissions will NOT be accepted
  • Official Transcripts must be collected by the Active Chapter Scholarship Chairman
  • Transcripts must be verified by the Active Chapter Advisor or Alumni Association Scholarship Chairman
  • All members are subject to and must abide by the Northern Illinois University Students Code of Conduct

When will all the winners be announced?
 
Once all the necessary records, including transcripts of eligible members, have been received, the Alumni Board Scholarship Chairman will gather and present a list of candidates for voting by the Alumni Board. Following the vote, the Alumni Scholarship Chairman will notify the local chapter of the selected recipients. Subsequently, the scholarship funds will be deposited into an account, and the recipient(s) will receive either a check, a deposit into their bursar's account, or, if applicable, a credit applied towards any outstanding balance on their housing contract. Certificates acknowledging the winners may be distributed at a suitable event or occasion.

If the GPA is below 3.0, whether in or out of the house, $100 will be awarded. The semester GPA for evaluation must be above 2.0 to be eligible for the award.)

Which organization is sponsoring the PSK Alumni / Dr. Anthony Fusaro scholarship program?

The Phi Sigma Kappa Alumni Association of Northern Illinois University is offering academic scholarships in honor of Brother Dr. Anthony Fusaro. Dr. Fusaro, a distinguished member of our fraternity, served as the local chapter advisor, National Grand President, and National Foundation President, and holds key positions within Phi Sigma Kappa to this day. He also contributed significantly to the NIU community as a Political Science professor, department chairman, and associate provost. Dr. Fusaro currently resides in Lakeland, FL after his retirement.

Who is eligible to receive the PSK Alumni Association / Dr. Anthony Fusaro scholarships?

There are three types of scholarships available, namely the Academic Excellence Award and the Director's Performance Award. To be eligible for the Academic Excellence Awards, the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be an initiated member in good standing during the semester the award is earned.
  • Must have enrolled/completed at least 12 hours at NIU for the semester.
  • Must have lived inside the chapter house during the semester when the grades are evaluated.

To qualify for the Director's Performance Award, the following requirements apply:

  • Must be an initiated member in good standing at the beginning of the semester the award is earned.
  • Must have enrolled/completed at least 12 hours at NIU for the semester.
  • Must have lived inside the chapter house during the semester when the grades are evaluated.
  • Must have received at least two consecutive Academic Excellence Awards (Note: Most Improved award recipients are not eligible if their semester grade is below the 3.0 threshold).
  • The Director's Scholarship will be continuously granted as long as the member maintains the requirement of receiving an Academic Excellence Award consecutively. The cumulative amount will increase based on the number of consecutive semesters (e.g., two consecutive semesters = $50, three consecutive semesters = $100, four consecutive semesters = $150, etc.). This amount is in addition to the Academic Excellence Award (highest active GPA included).

Conditions under which a scholarship will not be awarded:

  • If the member is not up-to-date on their financial obligations to the Alumni Association and the Active Chapter, including OMEGA financial balances.
  • If the member fails to uphold the other two Cardinal Principles of Phi Sigma Kappa, namely, To Promote Brotherhood and To Develop Character, as determined by the Active Chapter and/or the Alumni Association.

Who makes the decision regarding the scholarships?

Who’s eligible for receiving these scholarships?
 
 
Must have been an initiated member at the beginning of the year the award was earned.  Must serve in the position for the full year term (two semesters) and be recognized as having served in that role by the faculty advisor for that organization for the previous year (not currently in that role).  Must be elected into this position. Must be an executive board member (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, or Trustee) of the qualified Student Government Association recognized organization unless otherwise noted below.   Qualified organizations/positions are listed below.  The award amount is $200 per member.
 
  • Student Government Association Executive Officer (President, VP, Treasurer, Trustee)  - usually August through May
