Club Information & FAQ

Hello prospective member of the East Penn Speedskating Club,

Welcome!  We hope you enjoy short track speedskating as much as we do!  Here are some FAQs:

Where do we skate?

Power Play Rinks, 701 Haywood Drive, Exton, PA 19341

When are practices?

Club practice is held on Thursdays typically from 6:20pm to 7:40pm at Power Play Rinks. Off Ice training is held in the Lab Training center on the second floor of Power Play Rinks. Training is held Thursdays before ice session from 5:20pm-6:05pm. Club practice is also held on Saturdays in the Fall/Winter and occasonal Sundays at Power Play.

What do we do at practice?

It is recommended to get to practice about 30 minutes early for warm up and to set the pads on the ice.  We then skate for about 1 – 1.5 hours and remove the pads.

Who is our coach?

Our coach, C. Kyle Carr has had an exciting and successful career as both a short track speedskater and inline speedskater.  Kyle was fourth overall at the 2014 Olympic Trials and skated for the United States Olympic Team at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.  Kyle was a member of the United States World Cup Team every year from 2010 – 2013 and won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2011.  Kyle has been coaching East Penn Speedskating since December of 2014.

Do I need to buy my own skates?

You don’t need to immediately, however, you will need them shortly after beginning.  Properly fitting skates is very important while speedskating.  We do have speedskates available for new skaters to use, but we cannot guarantee that we have every size available.  Please contact a club officer or coach to see if your skater’s size is available.  If you decide to continue to skate, it would be best to purchase your own skates.  Skates consist of boots, blades and guards.

http://www.specialequipment.com sells short track skating equipment if you decide to pursue speedskating.  It is best that you speak to Kyle prior to buying skates, so that he can make recommendations for you.

What do I wear to skate?

For beginners, a helmet such as a bike or hockey helmet is fine to start with.  Soft knee pads worn either over or under pants, gloves such as hockey gloves, batting gloves or winter gloves are good for beginners.  Skaters must also wear long pants and long sleeves.  However, after you become a member of the club you will need to purchase a club skinsuit.

What fees are associated with speedskating?

There are fees for ice time, coaching fees and memberships are required to US Speedskating, MASA and the East Penn Speedskating Club.  Total fees vary from year to year.

How long is the season?

The main season regular is from September to March, Spring is additional training and Summer is used to prepare for competitions starting in September.

Do we compete?

Yes!  Skaters of all levels can compete.  Races are optional.  Races provide a great opportunity for team building and to meet skaters from many different backgrounds.  We compete in the Northeast Region with races held across the Northeast.

How can I help?

East Penn Speedskating Club is a volunteer organization, so any help that parents can provide is always welcome.  Bringing the skaters to practice on time and helping with setting up and removing pads is also helpful.
