À LA CARTE - MIDDLE SCHOOL STEM CLASSES

Session 1: Useless Box
September 12, 2019 – October 24, 2019 (Thursdays)

A “Useless Box” is a small box with an on/off switch and a hinged lid. Turn on the switch and a lever pops out, turns off the switch, then retreats. That is the machine’s sole purpose: You turn it on, and it turns itself off. Useless? Maybe. Fun? Definitely! We’ll use Arduinos for the brains, NeoPixels for lights, Laser Cutters to design the boxes, and Tinkercad to program.

Session 2: Individual Maker Space Project
October 31, 2019 – December 19, 2019 (Thursdays)

Creative inventors wanted! The sky is the limit in this freestyle Makers class. Students will have full access to our woodshop, including our laser cutter. Or, design your piece in TinkerCAD and then watch it come to life on our 3D printers. Robots more your style? We have Arduinos, Lego Mindstorms, and all the electronic parts you could ever want. We will have a showcase at the end to show off our projects.

Session 3: The Art of Science
January 16, 2020 – February 27, 2020 (Thursdays)

Let your imagination run wild and then bring your creation to life using our full STEM lab. We can make a wand that lights up as you swing it, fire up some clay figurines in the kiln that were cast from our own 3D printed models, or mix potions and turn them into lotions, perfumes, and body soaps. To top it off, we will laser cut journal covers so we can log our creative ideas and legendary tales. We are putting the "A" in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) this session!

Students will design, program, and build from 9:00-Noon. Then we will have a full hour to eat and socialize! A healthy lunch will be prepared by our full time students and is complimentary for students enrolled in this class.

Session 4: Physics of Flight
March 5, 2020 – April 30, 2020 (Thursdays)

Physics is all around us. But how it perpetuates the movement of things in flight is fascinating! Let's soar to new heights by studying the physics that make things fly. We'll experiment with rockets, catapults, helicoptors, airplanes, and more. Then let's get outdoors where we can build and test our own machines and mechanisms.
